Jerry Beche devrait être mort.
Il vit seul depuis dix ans sur une Terre dévastée par une attaque virale foudroyante, quand on vient le sauver. On le kidnappe, plutôt. Puis on l'entraîne à endurer les pires épreuves et on l'affecte à une équipe d' « éclaireurs », tous ayant survécu à la fin violente de leurs mondes respectifs. Ils ont été recrutés par une organisation appelée « Autorité ».
Le corps des Éclaireurs est chargé d'explorer systématiquement des Terres parallèles où l'Humanité s'est éteinte, sur lesquelles ils récupèrent des armes et des informations.
Mais quelle est donc cette « Autorité », la mystérieuse organisation qui a sauvé Beche et ses compagnons survivants ? Comment a-telle accès aux autres fils temporels ? Et pourquoi a-t-elle besoin d'instruments de mort ?
Alors qu'il obéit tant bien que mal à ses nouveaux maîtres, Jerry en vient à se méfier de ses compagnons.
Ils forment une drôle d'équipe, leurs motivations sont loin d'être claires, et des accidents commencent à gangrener leurs missions. Jerry soupçonne l'Autorité de leur mentir, et des membres de l'équipe de l'espionner.
